X-rays are an integral part of your oral healthcare plan. With X-ray images, all structures of your mouth, including those hidden below your gum tissue, can be monitored. X-rays used to be taken with a machine using significant amounts of radiation. At National Dental Hicksville, we can monitor the health of your mouth with digital X-rays.

What are Digital X-Rays?

Digital X-rays rely on electronics to capture images of the structures within your mouth, including between your teeth, the roots of your teeth and your jawbone. The images that are generated allow us to check for any abnormalities, infections or other issues (tumors, bone loss) that can otherwise go undetected until they become serious.

The process of capturing images is simple, quick and completely painless. We place a sensor, which is hooked up to a computer, into your mouth. We then click a button, and the images are taken. Within seconds they show up on our computer monitor, ready for reading. This is a vast improvement over traditional X-ray technology, which relies on radiation, and the images need to be developed in a separated dark room, taking valuable time away from your appointment. Digital X-ray technology allows us to spend your appointment with you, helping you to understand your diagnosis and your treatment options. Moreover, a major benefit is that your exposure to radiation is reduced up to 95% in most cases.

Better Preventative Care

The software that comes with digital X-ray technology has vastly improved our ability to provide you with outstanding preventative care. The images are shown almost immediately after capture on our computer monitor. From there, we can manipulate it in some different ways – zooming in, enhancing, changing the coloration from black and white to full color (or even negative). These features provide us with a way to spot even the smallest issues so that we can provide treatment right away before the issues grow serious.

Cavity Detection

Tooth decay is almost invisible in its earliest forms. Moreover, between the teeth, it’s impossible to see. Traditional X-rays were able to help us spot some cavities, but not usually until they started to progress. With digital X-ray technology, we can catch tooth decay as it is beginning, allowing us to put a stop to it and protect the health of your teeth.

Monitoring Your Jawbone

When bacteria attack your gums, they become swollen. The tissue then begins to pull away from your teeth, creating pockets into which bacteria can hide. Under the gums, the bacteria attack your periodontal ligaments and your jawbone. Both of these structures weaken, which affects their integrity. Your jaw can change shape, and your teeth can become loose and shift about. Digital X-rays allow us to monitor bone loss in your jaw. We can even compare older X-rays side by side with newer ones, or place one on top of the other, to make sure that bone loss from gum disease is not serious, or that it does not continue after treatment.

Improving Your Treatment

All of the features of digital X-rays allow us to see more than we ever could with traditional images. They allow us to create then better treatment plans that are specifically customized to me meet your needs. This helps us to improve your overall oral care and keep your mouth at its healthiest.
