Complete Dentures & Partial Dentures

Your teeth, although a small part of your body, are crucial. They perform a variety of essential tasks each day, from allowing you to eat and speak to keeping your jaw strong and healthy. When you lose your teeth, these functions are significantly impacted. At National Dental Hicksville, we offer several options for replacing missing teeth. These options include both complete and partial dentures.

Reasons for Missing Teeth

There are several different causes of tooth loss. One of the most common causes is gum (periodontal) disease. When plaque and bacteria build up in your mouth, your gums become irritated and swell. Swollen gums pull away from your teeth, creating pockets. Bacteria fall into these pockets and begin attacking your periodontal ligaments and jawbone, weakening them. Eventually, your teeth become loose, and they begin to fall out.

Other causes of tooth loss include:

  • Oral trauma.
  • Smoking.
  • Bruxism (grinding and clenching your teeth).
  • Changes in your hormones (menopause, pregnancy).

What are Dentures?

Dentures have been in use for hundreds of years. They have undergone many changes over the years, and today’s dentures are nothing like they were back then. In fact, today’s dentures are nothing like they were just a few decades ago. The dentures that are available now are much less bulky. They are also more natural looking, with teeth that look more like your natural teeth, and bases that are designed to match the color of your gums.

Dentures consist of replacement teeth set into a hard, acrylic base, and are made from molds of your mouth. They are a removable prosthesis and are supported by your gums, held in place by suction. There are two different types of dentures – complete dentures (for a full set of missing teeth) and partial dentures (for sections of missing teeth).

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures are used when you are missing an arch of teeth, whether it is your top teeth, bottom teeth, or even both sets. If you have any teeth remaining in your mouth that are unhealthy, they are removed before taking your impressions. The impressions are then used to design and then fabricate your custom set of new teeth.

Partial Dentures

If you are missing a section of teeth, but the teeth remaining in your mouth are still perfectly healthy, there is no need to have them extracted. In this case, partial dentures are an available option. Partial dentures are designed similarly to full dentures, being removable, and supported by your gums. However, for extra stability, partial dentures also have metal clasps that hook onto your natural teeth.

Denture Care

There is some extra care required for your dentures. They must be removed every night for cleaning. Brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture paste (or soap and water). Let them soak overnight in a denture cleaning solution. You should also take care of your mouth as well, brushing your gums (and any remaining teeth) with a soft bristled brush. These steps are important to limiting oral bacteria and preventing gum disease.

Benefits of Dentures

There are several benefits to dentures:

  • Improved eating and speaking abilities.
  • Dentures fill out your cheeks and lips, preventing sunken facial features, taking years off of your appearance.
  • Restored smile and confidence.
