Laser Dentistry

In recent decades, there have been some amazing developments in dental technology. In the past 20 years, laser dentistry has grown significantly in popularity. It is now being used for many important procedures, including periodontal treatments and frenectomies. At National Dental Hicksville, we are now using laser dentistry to perform oral surgery.

Improving Old Techniques

In the past, surgical procedures have been performed with a metal scalpel. The scalpel is a very effective tool, and still, has its uses, but it also has a few drawbacks. For one, the scalpel causes a significant amount of bleeding as it cuts your tissues. There is also a lot of pain and swelling that often occurs following your surgical procedure.

The laser tool used in the dental field utilizes a high-intensity beam of light. This beam is no thicker than a human hair, but it can effectively cut through soft tissues with ease. It provides us with pinpoint accuracy and has the flexibility to handle both intricate jobs as well as larger ones, such as the removal of large tumors. With the use of the laser in place of the traditional scalpel, the biggest issues associated with the scalpel are greatly reduced.

How Does the Laser Work?

With laser dentistry, the only thing that interacts with your oral tissues is the laser beam. The laser is adjustable so that we can set the wavelength of the light to suit a variety of different needs. It can make incisions, and remove infected gum tissue. As the laser cuts through your oral tissues, it cauterizes them, sealing the blood vessels. This helps to reduce the amount of bleeding that you experience during your surgical procedure. Because the laser is so accurate, with the ability to remove a few cells at a time, there is less tissue trauma involved. This means that the amount of pain and swelling you experience post-procedure is significantly decreased.

What Else Can the Laser Do?

The addition of the laser to the field of oral surgery has allowed us to maintain our goal of providing you with the best possible oral health care. There are several other uses for the laser in dentistry as well:
•  The treatment of gum (periodontal) disease. The laser is used to remove infected gum tissue so that a complete scaling and root planing can be performed.
•  The removal of decay from cavities, and preparing teeth for fillings.
•  The preparation of your teeth for dental crowns.
•  Whitening procedures.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

There are several benefits that come with laser dentistry:
•  Bleeding during your procedure is significantly decreased.
•  With less tissue manipulation and trauma, you experience much less pain and swelling while you heal from your procedures.
•  Pinpoint accuracy.
•  The laser can stimulate new bone and tissue growth.
•  Because there is less pain and swelling, patients who typically experience anxiety when it comes to dental visits are more likely to get the treatments that they need.

Is Laser Dentistry Safe?

There are some questions as to whether or not the use of a laser for treatment is safe. At National Dental, we have received extensive training, and are highly experienced with the laser’s use. The use of a laser is just as safe as using any other dental tool. Because of the high intensity of the light beam, however, you will be provided with a pair of special lenses to wear to cover and protect your eyes.

Laser dentistry has greatly improved the way that we can perform many treatments. For more information, contact National Dental Hicksville today at (516) 629-5086!
