All-On-4® Treatment Concept
At National Dental Hicksville, we offer multiple options for replacing missing teeth. For decades, the treatment of choice was with dentures. Today, dental implants have taken over as one of the most popular options. Dental implants have numerous advantages over traditional tooth replacement options, even though they require a surgical procedure. We offer several types of dental implants, including the All-on-4® implants.
Replacing Your Teeth with Dental ImplantsDental implants are the latest option available for tooth replacement, preferred by both patients and practitioners alike. They consist of a small titanium rod that is surgically implanted into your jaw. The implant relies on a process known as osseointegration, or fusion, of your jawbone to the rod. Successful fusion turns the implant into a strong and stable “root” that supports your replacement teeth.
What are All-on-4® Treatment Concept Implants? For the implants to be successful, your jawbone needs to fuse with them. For that to happen, you must first have sufficient bone mass in your jaw. However, when you lose your teeth, your jawbone begins to resorb, and the bone becomes weak. Typically, an implant supported denture is supported on 6 to 8 implants. However, the longer you wait, the more bone loss you experience. Without sufficient bone mass, your implants may fail, and even one failed implant can compromise your entire implant supported denture. In some cases, a bone graft can be performed to restore lost bone mass, but a bone graft requires a whole separate surgical procedure.
All-on-4® dental implants provide a way for those typically not considered candidates for dental implants to experience the benefits of dental implants without the need for a bone graft first. Instead of 6 to 8 implants, the All-on-4® implants use only four implants to support an entire implant supported denture. This is possible because the implants are strategically placed. Two implants are placed toward the front of your jaw, where there is naturally more bone mass. The other two implants are placed toward the back of the jaw, one on each side and they are inserted at a 45-degree angle. This angle helps to achieve maximum contact with the implant and your jawbone while avoiding your sinus cavities.
Placing Your All-on-4® ImplantsPlacing your All-on-4® implants is similar to placing any other implants. After a local anesthetic, we make incisions in your gums to expose the jawbone. We then drill into the bone and place the implants. Your gums are stitched closed around the titanium rods, leaving a small amount exposed above the tissue.
Healing from surgery can take several weeks to a few months. While you heal, you are provided with a set of temporary teeth so that you can regain some of the functions of your mouth. After you have healed, abutments are placed on the tops of the rods, and we then take impressions of your mouth. The impressions are used to design your permanent restorative teeth. After they are fabricated, they are screwed into place on top of the implants.
